Akuammine is an indole alkaloid. It is the most abundant alkaloid found in the seeds from the tree Picralima nitida, commonly known as akuamma. Akuamma is known for its analgesic action and has historically been used to alleviate pain that is caused by injury, neuropathy, fibromyalgia, arthritis, and migraines. In different hospitals of Ghana, the seeds are sold under the brand name ‘Picap’ as a painkiller, and studies prove that it has potential analgesic activity. This alkaloid is also known for reducing stress and providing an overall sense of well-being. It is commonly used in its native countries for those suffering from panic attacks and anxiety.
